One spring morning, a rooster belonging to a market gardener in Old Montreal escaped from his yard and landed... on the steps of the courthouse.

Intrigued by the comings and goings of the black robes, he began to crow at the top of his lungs every time the courtroom left, disturbing judges and lawyers.

Faced with the commotion, a bailiff reportedly said laughingly: "This rooster is demanding justice for the hens!"

Since then, he has been affectionately known in the neighborhood as "the feathered litigant."
